A sweet koala mother and joey are taking the internet by storm after pictures surfaced of the two after they were hit by a vehicle. The small joey refused to leave the side of his mother and kept on hugging her no matter what was happening.
The pictures are a reminder of just how beautiful and amazing the bond between a mother and her child can be, even when it is between species who aren’t human. The pictures were taken at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital and are still being shared after a number of years. The mamma bear, known as Lizzy, was brought in with her joey, Phantom, after the two were hit by a vehicle just west of Brisbane.
The zoo revealed that both animals were hit by the car, but that the joey did not have any injuries. However, the mother had to stay and be treated for a collapsed lung and facial trauma. The baby, who was just 6-months-old at the time, would not leave his mother’s side while she was being treated. He hugged her and clung onto her no matter what veterinarian personnel did.
The hospital released the pictures on Facebook to show the wonderful bond between mothers and babies. They stated to ABC that Phantom would not leave his mother’s side during many of her procedures and check-ups. When they did have to separate the two, the joey was placed in a “pouch” in order to make him feel protected while away from his mother.
Of course, the beautiful pictures and amazing story went viral after the hospital shared it on their Facebook page. Person after person commented on the photos, sending the koala bear and her baby lots of love and well wishes. People couldn’t get enough of the emotional pictures and couldn’t wait for an update. Luckily, the Australia Zoo released a statement concerning the pair after the surgery.
They let readers know that the mother and baby were doing fine. The pair did stay in the care of the zoo for around a month to make sure they were both healthy before heading back to the wild. Here is another picture of the pair going back into their familiar surroundings, climbing their way to a wonderful freedom:
